A Close Look at the 2022 Harley Davidson Low Rider ST Motorcycle (video review included)

The Harley Davidson Low Rider St is the most exciting release of Harley's newest bunch packing a Milwaukee Eight 117 engine—the most powerful factory-installed engine available from Harley Davidson.  The ST comes wrapped in a performance style capped by side bags and a fixed-front fairing that clearly brings to mind the old FXRT tourer.

With its West Coast custom styling, the Low Rider ST is definitely a looker- sporting a tall handlebar, a jacked up rear end, and lockable saddlebags mounted high.  The main attraction of the ST however is its frame mounted FXRT fairing.  The three integrated split stream vents were placed to help minimize head buffeting at highway speeds, while the 6-inch-high windshield has a dark smoke tint to it.

Brad Richards, Harley-Davidson vice president of styling and design, adds, “With a dominant central headlamp flanked by side vents, the genetic connection to the original FXRT remains familiar. The sharper creases and revised proportions in the Low Rider ST fairing provide a look that is intended to be modern, athletic, and aerodynamically superior to the FXRT fairing. The raised fitment of the saddlebags high above the exhaust reinforces the performance of the model-the message being that these bags will not limit lean angle when the bike is pushed to the limit.”

As for those rigid clamshell saddlebags, they’re basically lifted from the Sport Glide (discontinued for 2022 in the US), but mounted 2 inches higher to allow for greater lean angles.  They’re also lockable, and can be easily removed via a quick release mechanism and hold a combined capacity of 1.9 cubic feet, or 53.8 liters of space.

In addition to the usual accessories for this model, one unique add on for the Low Rider ST will be the Harley Davidson Audio powered by Rockford Fosgate Audio Kit. Harley says it is designed specifically for the Low Rider ST and will drop right into the fairing, no extra wiring needed. The system includes a compact 250 watt amplifier with digital signal processing (DSP) technology and a pair of 5.25-inch woofers and two remote tweeters.

Other features on the ST are a a single 5.75-inch LED headlamp, a deep solo seat designed to hold pilots in place during aggressive runs, and the moto-style handlebar on 4-inch pull-back risers. Instrumentation is also super clean on this bike, with a barely noticeable compact digital display inset in the handlebar riser.

Some minor changes can be found in the Low Rider S’ cockpit, with a new handlebar mounted analog tachometer and digital speedometer replacing the tank console instruments on previous models, for better visibility. There’s also a new low profile textured black tank console with FXLRS badging riding on the fuel tank.

Like the Low Rider ST, the Low Rider S also gets the Heavy Breather intake, which distinguishes it from its 114 powered predecessor.  Overall with its West Coast styling, and with no weight gain for 2022, Harley fans will enjoy all the new upgrades.
