A First Look at the All New Italian Crusier 2023 Ducati Diavel V4 (video review included)

The Panigale V4 R superbike, the Streetfighter (in no fewer than three variants), and the Multistrada V4 Rally are just a few of the vehicles that Ducati has fitted with its new V-4 engine. As surprising as it may seem, the Italian brand's powerful cruiser, the Diavel, which was proudly on display at EICMA 2022, now uses the same four-cylinder engine. Giving the powerful Diavel two additional cylinders increases its already impressive performance figures, but what you might not expect is that the new Diavel V4 weighs less than the previous generation Diavel 1260 S.

In order to stay true to the brand, the new model also received a stylistic update that is likely to cause controversy.
The 1,158cc vee-four mill in the new Diavel, which was adapted from the V4 in the Pangale and Streetfighter, boasts a claimed output of 168 horsepower, though you'll need to spin it up to 10,750 rpm to get there. Although torque in the V4 is down slightly from 95 lb.-ft., 1260 S has been reduced to 93 lb.-ft., at a more manageable 7,500 rpm, it still surpasses the already jaw-dropping 157 hp of the Gen 2 bike packing the Testastretta DVT L-twin. The rear two jugs can also be turned off at slower speeds, as we've seen on previous Ducati V4s, to save fuel and prevent heat buildup. However, Ducati claims that doing this changes the sound character because the frequency gives off a higher tone when all four cylinders are running.

The massive 240/45 rear tire is still a distinguishing feature of the Diavel, as it was in earlier models. Five-spoke alloy wheels with decorative machined surfaces are used. The Diavel's new engine architecture is evident in the four exhaust exits.

The iconic single-sided swingarm of the Diavel, made of aluminum as well, is fastened to the updated aluminum frame, which, along with the engine's lighter weight, results in a weight reduction of more than 25 pounds when compared to the Diavel 1260 S. The larger, redesigned gas tank (now 5.3 pounds) and some geometry changes, including a steeper rake (from 27 degrees to 26 degrees) and 4.4 inches of trail, are made possible by the new foundation and the engine's smaller size. The wheelbase of the V4 is also slightly shorter than that of the Diavel 1260, at 62.7 inches.
A robust, inverted 50mm fork and a monoshock with slightly more travel make up the suspension, and the braking system has been upgraded to supersport-level Brembo Stylema Monoblock calipers that work on 330mm discs up front to provide the frontal stopping power.
A de facto design element is the large dual air scoops that are built into the new fuel tank.

The handlebars are moved 20mm closer to the rider while the seat height in the upper portion increases slightly to 31.1 inches.  An all new 5 inch TFT dash unit is also included with the 2023 Diavel V4 to better display its three power modes and four riding modes which are: Sport, Touring, Urban, and the new Wet mode. In addition to controlling the full range of electronic rider aids like traction control, ABS cornering, quick shift, and cruise control, you can also access Bluetooth connectivity and navigation here.
Additionally, the Diavel V4 receives new double C-shaped LED light clusters for the front and rear.

The cockpit otherwise remains largely unchanged, featuring upright seating, mid-mount foot controls, and a sophisticated but still wide seat that can be quickly converted into a single-seater using the included passenger seat cover. The V4's passenger pegs and rear grab bar can both be retracted to keep the outline neat, which is another thoughtful design feature.
Along with an increased seat height, the new Diavel has a slightly sharper steering angle. Brembo Stylema brakes have replaced the old, fully adjustable forks.

Naturally, the Diavel has always been known for its divisive aesthetics, and the V4 does not disappoint in that regard. The massive 8-inch rear tire is still a distinguishing feature of the new bike, according to Ducati, and the angular fuel tank also gains larger dual air scoops up front to serve as a de facto design element. Although the bodywork around the radiator and headers is new, in our opinion it somewhat detracts from the cleaner lines of earlier Diavels.
It is simple to convert the Diavel V4 from a two-seater to a solo vehicle thanks to the standard removal of the passenger seat cover.

The tail is also more angular and skinnier, and a light cluster beneath it has an array of LEDs that resembles a beehive and forms a double "C" shape to match the new DRL front arrangement. The massive 240/45 Pirelli rear tire is still mounted on five-spoke alloy wheels, as it was on previous Diavels.
The can't-miss 240/45 rear tire still stands out as a distinguishing feature despite the new front snout and DRL.

The new Diavel V4 will be sold in US dealerships starting in the spring of 2023 and will be available in either Thrilling Black or Classic Ducati Red. The MSRP of the Diavel V4 in the US will start at either $26,695 for Ducati Red or $26,995 for Thrilling Black.
